ABSTRACT

Summary. The author discusses the effect of continuous change and technological advances in the information industry on the role of librarians. Not only are new competencies required, but also new ways of thinking and behaving. Some of these challenge long-held philosophies about librarianship and access to information. A review of services at the University of British Columbia (UBC) brought many of these issues to the front. Librarians seem to react to this challenge to traditional values and attitudes in predictable ways. This is explained in the context of John Enright’s ideas on “change and resilience.” Lists of future roles, competencies, and strategies derived from the literature and from electronic discussion groups are provided.
