ABSTRACT

Following Chapter 2’s outline of the BRI on its vision, rationales and geographical manifestation, this chapter further elaborates BRI’s operating mechanisms and interactive institutional actors and its practical perspectives. The collaborative mechanisms underpinning the BRI are analysed, including mechanisms connecting participant countries and coordinating regional development across China. The chapter discusses institutional settings and emerging institutional agents within BRI and its project representations in the domestic media and academic literature including achievements and outcomes so far summarised. Different from the following chapters in the book, this chapter focusses on investigating official archive and policy documents from sources within China. Cognizant of the existence of mixed feelings towards the BRI among the different countries, it aims, together with Chapter 2, to present the BRI’s institutional context and practices as a China-led global economic development strategy from an inside-out perspective.
