ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on geopolitical and international relations in and through the Korean Peninsula, reflecting the potential role of regional and inter-continental transport networks. The chapter suggests that there are opportunities to link and facilitate the economies of the Korean Peninsula through investment in macro-scale transport networks. While interactions with geographically neighbouring powerful economies, namely, China, Japan and Russia, are of significance in the context of transport infrastructure perspectives, the links can be further extended to various directions including the new Asian Economic Corridor. The chapter provides an understanding of the spatial structure, historic development, economic interactions and transport linkages of the Korean Peninsula from the late 19th century to date.
