ABSTRACT

Current treatments for cancer have greatly improved survival rates, but they also produce numerous acute, chronic, and late-appearing side effects that undermine the health and quality of life of cancer survivors. Being physically active maintains or improves physical function and psychological wellbeing, reduces the negative impact of several cancer-related side effects, and may also reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and increase survival rates. This chapter will provide an overview of the evidence on physical activity and cancer and present the model of CU Fitter™, a cancer specific exercise programme that runs alongside the Cancer United™ support group, to help people with cancer to lead a more active, happier and healthier life at every stage of their cancer journey, from diagnosis and beyond.
