ABSTRACT

The development of programmes aimed at improving the health and quality of life of older adults is a key need in a society that is ageing at an accelerated pace. In this chapter, we present an Adapted Utilitarian Judo (JUA) programme. This project not only addresses the prevention of the fall of the older adult, making it the first programme to focus on this element, but it also offers a pioneering tool for the proactive and global treatment of falls. Along these lines, in addition to improving the physical condition of this population, it produces improvements in psychological variables related to falls, such as the Fear of Falling (FOF). As shown in this chapter, the programme has resulted in significant improvements in all the variables analysed by the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), both in its domestic and social dimensions.
