ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the establishment and development of a coach education programme in freestyle BMX and skateboarding in the United Kingdom. It highlights the sports’ interconnection to a social subculture and the evolution and implementation of this into the coaching programme. The concepts of Pierre Bourdieu are utilised to highlight the impact of non-linear pedagogy on the coaching programme in order to retain a sense of authenticity, but also to develop a clear model for progression of the sport into its professionalisation and introduction to the Olympics in 2020. The chapter concludes with key development points for the merging of sports that originate from social subcultures into a successful business model which aims to not strip the riders of their cultural identity whilst also offering them a way to earn a living from coaching the sport they love.
