ABSTRACT

This chapter presents six case studies of Grade 10 adolescents in Singapore schools to develop portraits of youth purpose among adolescents in the Singapore education system. In all cases, students’ sense-making of their schooling and lives are set against the prevailing tensions wrought by an instrumental and high-performance school culture in Singapore. This chapter also examines the roles of teachers, parents, friends and significant others in the community in helping students sustain wellbeing and develop noble value systems and life goals.
