ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book investigates the nexus between infrastructure and agriculture in rural areas in the context of the Indian state of Karnataka. It analyses the changes that the firm portfolio and financing behaviour of the non-financial corporations have undergone in India in the post-reforms period, using firm-level data drawn from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy prowess database. The book provides an overview of financial system in India in general and shadow banks in particular. It examines the impact of foreign ownership and Intellectual property rights protection on innovation activities. The book traces the system building activities of molecular diagnostic industry in the aftermath of economic liberalisation programme initiated in the 1990s. It explores the interplay between two forces in the education market in India and seeks to identify the determinants of private tuitions in India.
