ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to extended realities (XR), which incorporate virtual, augmented and mixed realities (VR, AR and MR), with a particular focus on the role of geovisualization. It defines the key terminology of this rapidly growing field before explaining the fundamental principles behind its technologies and providing an overview of their applications. The chapter also offers a critical evaluation of the ongoing impact that extended reality technologies are having on society and offers some fresh perspectives on their future evolution.
