ABSTRACT

The ocean is a space that inspires action; its bio-dynamic ‘agency’ is unapologetically intangible. This dynamism further evades attempts to map the oceans, which remain the world’s last uncharted terrain. Although they are far from ‘all-knowing’, modern ocean charts conspicuously omit the term Oceanis Incognita and humans have guessed the characteristics of the ocean floor since the beginning of maritime exploration. This chapter describes a range of contemporary methods and technologies available to complement the mapping of the ocean surface and, to an extent, what lies beneath it.
