ABSTRACT

Geospatial technologies such as web/cloud mapping, global satellite navigation systems (GNSS), geographical information systems (GIS), remote sensing, social media, artificial intelligence, and crowdsourced mapping have become indispensable in humanitarian relief activities for protecting lives. These geospatial technologies assist humanitarian relief workers in their efforts to respond to humanitarian crises, and also provide opportunities for the general public to become involved in humanitarian efforts as ‘remote’ mappers. In addition to responding to humanitarian crises once they have occurred, geospatial technologies also may be used to plan for and to mitigate a crisis before it occurs. This chapter provide an overview of common geospatial technologies used in humanitarian relief activities as well as examples of their use by different organisations.
