ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the methodological aspects of the study. It deals with a description of the sample, the sampling procedure, and the variables and instruments that were used for assessment. It describes the procedures that were used for data collection and analyses. The chapter explains the way the results are presented, focusing less on comparisons of countries or groups and more on the interrelationships among variables and clusters of variables. It presents what psychologists call the standard treatment, which is the statistical procedure psychologists followed to ensure that the instruments used measure the same constructs across all the countries and ethnic groups in our sample. In all countries, both immigrant and non-immigrant youth were sampled. Thirteen societies of settlement and 26 immigrant groups were sampled. Several immigrant groups were represented in more than one country. Differences between immigrant samples and national samples with regard to years of schooling were significant in some countries.
