ABSTRACT
Picture making and picture using are central parts of Western life today. We can hardly imagine a world without pictures. Yet the Islamic world is next door to us. The existence of such a society shows that pictures cannot be said to be an intrinsic, inevitable feature of life. This chapter considers how image making became a part of so many human traditions without ever being an essential human attribute.
