ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an opportunity for readers to gain a deeper insight into children’s capacity to articulate their thoughts, feelings and actions about how they manage everyday challenging situations. It offers detailed examples of how visual images may be used by adults to engage young children in discussions about coping and coping-related activities in both the educational and family context. This includes a focus on how adults can cultivate a safe and secure space to effectively engage their children in deeper meaningful conversations. Children are provided with building blocks with which to develop social and emotional competence through learning to share understandings as an outcome of conversations with adults. The cards provide a stimulus and a ‘way in’ through images representing stressful situations and coping options.
