ABSTRACT

Mindfulness as an intervention within sports injury settings has gained greater research attention in recent years; however, the majority of this has centred on mindfulness as intervention for injury prevention. Therefore, this chapter is written to make a case as to why injury practitioners should consider adopting mindfulness-based approaches into sports injury rehabilitation. This position is based on the burgeoning evidence that we do currently have from sports injury settings, as well as the almost omnipresent perspective that mindfulness-based approaches improve athletes' health and performance. As such, this is a little different to some of the other chapters in the book; more exploratory in nature, slightly shorter and drawing on arguments from different schools of thought in psychology, to form a series of arguments and questions that can be used to guide future research and practice. This chapter will (1) outline the concept of mindfulness and the different mindfulness-based approaches, (2) discuss some of the mindfulness literature that draws relevant conclusions that could underpin mindfulness application within sports injury rehabilitation and (3) share an applied case study for consideration.
