ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the planning and design of resilient cities particularly during periods of urban transformation. The author illustrates how climate change may impact Rio de Janeiro and how intensified periods of rain, heat island effects, and potential droughts will not only threaten urban infrastructure but also urban populations as the incidence of infectious diseases may increase. However, in some areas, proactive design and planning can mitigate these issues if policies can be put in place today.
