ABSTRACT

This essay reflects upon the urban design and resilience workshops carried out in Rio de Janeiro by the University of North Carolina Charlotte and the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro during the summers of 2015, 2016, and 2017. Written from the perspective of a practicing architect and urban designer, the chapter discusses the results of the workshops, their quality, and the fact that their practical implementation would be unlikely due to weak policies that ultimately undermine the city’s capacity to plan.
