ABSTRACT
This essay examines Barra da Tijuca as an elite beachfront neighborhood in relation to successive housing policies that reinforced segregation between the poor and wealthy classes in Rio de Janeiro. Based upon ethnographic research, the author examines perceptions of mega-event investments in mass transportation that have resulted in a greater potential for integration; however, affluent residents view this as an invasion of their once idyllic enclave.
