ABSTRACT

Advances in mobile health technology have the potential to substantially improve the quality of life for older patients with mental health conditions. This chapter reviews the growing openness and barriers toward mobile health technology among the elderly and patients who experience serious mental health conditions. The chapter then reviews the new role that smartphone and tablet games and apps may play in improving cognition, communication with mental health care providers, and socialization. After discussing the possibilities of telemedicine, robotics, medication management technology, passive remote monitoring, and smart home systems, this chapter provides examples of particular mobile health technological strategies for treating common mental health syndromes for older adults, including depressive, anxiety, and sleep disorders. The chapter provides information on already available and upcoming technologies to improve the treatment of mental health disorders in the steadily growing older population.
