ABSTRACT

Mental health-related mobile applications (apps) offer a promising new means to deliver psychological interventions and improve psychotherapy. Over the past decade, thousands of such apps have become available, but relatively few have been empirically evaluated, and those that have been evaluated typically are not publicly available. This chapter is intended to help therapists find quality apps that they can recommend to or use with their psychotherapy patients. Practical clinical advice is offered on how best to incorporate mental health apps into care, including from the beginning (i.e., informed consent) to the ending (e.g., relapse prevention) of an episode of psychotherapy. Given that mobile health technology will certainly have a larger role in mental health care in the future, it is imperative that therapists acquire the requisite knowledge and skills to continue to evolve with these changes.
