ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a qualitative study which aimed to determine whether a Turkish EMI university’s claim to being international regards linguistic diversity in its policy documents, practices, and linguistic landscape. The findings show that standard native English is promoted as the acceptable kind of academic English. Similarly, there was a prevalence of norm-oriented perceptions of English among most students under the influence of dominant language ideologies. We also found that the linguistic landscape is largely dominated by Turkish and English with quite limited representation of other languages. The findings imply that the university, as it stands now, needs to revise its language policies to meet the demands of an international university.
