ABSTRACT
This chapter explores issues in relation to linguistic diversity on an Australian university campus as an ethnographic case study. The aim of the chapter is to raise awareness of linguistic diversity and language hierarchy in terms of multilingualism and “multivarietalism” of English among university students and staff, and to enhance the development of multilingual and multivarietal mindsets in the Australian society. The significance of the research behind this chapter is that it provides a systematic description of the linguistic landscape and mindscape (the mindsets of people regarding both languages other than English and different kinds of English) in an Australian higher education context, and it showcases the internationalisation of universities in Australia.
