ABSTRACT

In the original text and the afterword, both from 1927, Freud reiterates his belief that a university degree does not qualify someone to be an analyst. Freud was under intense pressure from the Viennese medical community, which sharply criticized his discoveries. At one point in the paper Freud states emphatically that psychoanalysis is not a branch of medicine, or even medical psychology Freud rightly insists that only the suffering of training analysis leads to knowledge of what it truly is. The activity of training psychoanalysts was already a concern for Freud, even at a time when he could influence the still fledgling psychoanalytic movement. When Psychoanalysis and Power combine they form a relationship in which Truth is excluded. Psychoanalysis subject to Power has allowed psychoanalytical institutions to exert significant influence on the training analysis of candidates in training.
