ABSTRACT

One of the characteristic features of the contemporary labor market in Poland is the widespread use of hidden labor, often referred to as ’moonlighting, ’black jobs’ or employment in the underground economy. The phenomenon of hidden labor is not directly statistically observable and so indirect methods should be used to estimate its size. A major source of information for the estimates in question is findings of the labor force surveys which have been conducted by the Labor Division of the Central Statistical Office for three years. However the data on hidden labor provided by these surveys were limited to the total number of employed exclusively in the underground economy so it was necessary to carry out a special module survey. This was a survey in which participation in and income gained from hidden labor was analyzed from both the supply and the demand sides. Hidden labor can be looked at from the point of view of employers or employees.
