ABSTRACT

The design of rehabilitation facilities can help people manage the myriad physical, psychological, cognitive, and social challenges of living with debilitating illnesses or injuries. There are many types of rehabilitation facilities, including inpatient and outpatient rehab facilities, as well as long-term acute care rehab. This chapter introduces the health needs of individuals who have physical disabilities and cognitive disorders, describes the history of rehabilitative medicine and design, outlines key design concepts for rehab facilities, and presents case studies that utilize these concepts. Rehab facilities utilize a wide range of diagnostic and treatment spaces, equipment, and technology to help patients regain mental and physical capabilities. These facilities must accommodate several therapies intended to strengthen patients’ minds and bodies through spaces like meditation rooms, therapy pools, rehab gyms, and places to practice daily living skills. Rehabilitation facilities need to deliver high-level care for patients working to rebuild their lives.
