ABSTRACT

This chapter’s focus is the architectural design of art museums. It discusses the profound role of architecture for museums on the basis of gallery spatial organization and its effects on visitor explorations. Drawing upon the author’s research study, the discussion presents peculiar ways in which visitor experiences are influenced by gallery design engendered within the museum architecture. Understanding this influence helps identify visitor-centered gallery design objectives for art museums. The discussion then explores how to integrate these objectives with space programing process, and suggests this integration can advance the planning process while articulating gallery design within museums’ building space program.
