ABSTRACT

How do our senses interact and influence the museum experience? How does the environment alter a museum goer’s perceptions of art? Examining museum design through a sensory lens, this chapter will describe case studies which use sensory variables ranging in intensity and type, and their associated impacts on a museum visitor’s experience and perceptual accessibility. Cultivating a deeper understanding of environmental sensory stimuli, user perception, and exhibit content can help designers choreograph the most appropriate sense interactions to support and enrich the sensory and cognitive experience for all.
