ABSTRACT

Museum visitors inevitably leave exhausted—a phenomenon called museum fatigue. The welfare of our bodies should be actively considered in museum design to address five problems of posture and movement: bad standing, not enough places to sit, no place or permission to recline, fixed movement circuits, and no way out. Developed by Cranz, Body Conscious Design gives people choice in postures and legitimates making oneself and others comfortable. The authors discuss how new and existing American, Canadian, and international museums can and do incorporate Body Conscious Design into their exhibition spaces and programing to maximize visitors’ experiences by minimizing their fatigue.
