ABSTRACT

The evolution of the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) presented here describes its transformation from traditional museum to multi-faceted campus, guided by the strategy that its unusual site will be developed with the purpose of broadening and diversifying its audience to better represent the community it serves. Bringing art closer to popular pastimes opens doors of access to non-traditional museum users, and, by leading with citizen-based design practices, improves public wellbeing. Once the location of institutional incarceration and degradation, NCMA and its park are now a cultural destination undergoing environmental and social restoration.
