ABSTRACT

Parent involvement is widely believed to influence students’ social emotional development and school achievement. This chapter presents a review of current research to define the international scope of knowledge about how parent involvement influences children’s STEM learning. Research findings are organized to describe (1) the academic advantages of parent involvement, (2) culture as a context for parent involvement, and (3) teacher/school perspectives on parent involvement. This chapter reveals the considerable research on parent involvement in science and mathematics, as juxtaposed with the limited international research on parent involvement in STEM, and recommended opportunities for future research.
