ABSTRACT
This chapter considers how people have responded and interacted with place through the ages. It particularly explores the notion of meaning and the way that human beings seek to explore their relationship with the cosmos. It argues that focusing on ideas such as awe and wonder provides an alternative perspective on sustainability and the place of human being in the natural world. This holds out the prospect of enriching lives which are currently focused primarily on consumerism and economic growth.
