ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book details the investigation into the problematic question of teacher recruitment and retention. It examines the reasons underlying the teacher supply crisis, drawing on data relating to the number of recruits to initial teacher education and on the rising number of pupils in English schools. The book moves into the territory of teacher attrition. It discusses the importance of teacher continuing professional development. The book explores a different aspect of localised challenge: that of sense-making of education policy in relation to small schools and recruiting and sustaining teachers. It describes and analyzes the teacher supply situation in different countries.
