ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines strategies that school boards employ to recruit and retain teachers in selected jurisdictions in Canada. We use the term ‘novice teacher’ to refer to those who have five or fewer years of classroom experience. The data sources used concerning recruitment strategies, novice teacher induction/mentoring/support and entry into the profession were sourced and collected from peer-reviewed literature, education authorities, teacher associations/federations/unions and district school boards’ websites. We provide examples of legislation, policies and practices in district school boards and provincial/territorial governments to hire and support new teachers and strategies and programmes that have been implemented to retain newly certified teachers. The chapter concludes with recommendations to improve teacher selection, support and success.
