ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide teachers with a multicultural framework from which to consider the dynamic processes in teaching group psychotherapy. The chapter’s approach in addressing issues of multiculturalism is embedded in an understanding of the social construction of cultural identities and the concepts of discourse and positioning. Social constructionism is a movement in the social sciences, particularly sociology and social psychology, that points to how our experiences are constructed rather than determined in advance as part of the natural working of biological processes (Elder-Vass, 2012). The multicultural approach of this chapter is also informed by the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Multicultural Guidelines (American Psychological Association, 2017). The co-writers, the teacher, and a student in a group psychotherapy course apply the social constructionist approach, set with APA’s multicultural frame, and the concepts of positioning and discourse to interpersonal and systems interactions.
