ABSTRACT

Individuals with chronic health conditions and disabilities comprise the largest and most diverse minority group in the United States; however, group leaders often feel unprepared when this population presents in their practices. In this chapter, the authors build group leaders’ cultural competence by framing disability as a multicultural experience and diversity variable. Best practices for providing affirming and effective group treatment for this population are discussed, including addressing disability-related microaggressions and working through group leaders’ countertransferential barriers.
