ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify individual systems, including race, age, and gender, that make up a series of subgroups within the larger group of incarcerated inmates at a California medium security male prison. It further examines a few treatment methods and specifically illuminates attachment styles for traditional masculine stereotypes. Most importantly, it examines how humanizing the offender can impact the individual and subsequently the group as a whole, within the therapeutic milieu and beyond. The chapter examines transference experienced by inmates and countertransference experienced by a White female facilitator. Finally, the chapter looks at the importance of supportive supervision and consultation.
