ABSTRACT

There is an increase in the prevalence of complex careers across the labour market globally and this has coincided with an unprecedented expansion of higher education. Subsequently, changes have been introduced to meet the needs of the massified higher education market that is characteristic of an increasingly diverse student enrolment and the knowledge economy into which students will transition. It is often noted in higher education that the responsibility of preparing for future professional work rests with the student and not with the institution. The authors explore how leadership development is a vital component for the future survival for any profession and posits that it is no different for musicians. This chapter presents the case that institutions have an ethical obligation to provide the functional curriculum and innovative pedagogical practices which will assist students in their graduate transition to careers.
