ABSTRACT

By making connections across diverse music programmes, this chapter draws attention to the dynamics of pedagogical approaches which encourage learners’ deep and agentic engagement. Through exploration of pedagogical and curricular leadership challenges and successes from around the globe, the authors draw out key themes and highlight the implications for development of leadership in higher music education. Compelling arguments in support of leadership development as a core component of student musicians’ development are presented. By illustrating the qualities required for graduate musicians to create and sustain their music careers, the authors suggest how these qualities might be developed so that the next generation of leaders is equipped to meet its full potential.
