ABSTRACT

Family understanding and support of one's educational journey is central to Latinx students' transition from high school to college and from college to graduate school. Questions and concerns about how long, how far away, and with whom Latinx student spend time are central to family concerns and subsequent decisions to pursue and engage higher education. All too frequently; however, this process is inaccurately and aculturally perceived by university personnel with family considered a limiting structure and force for Latinx students. Yet, when understood within a cultural framework consistent to the worldview and cultural orientation of values, beliefs and practices, Latinx families and communities are a substantive source of informal educational support and strength that culturally nurture Latinx students propelling them to graduation.
