ABSTRACT

A growing number of scholars write about the value that modeling can provide to both teacher educators and teacher candidates. Vincent Aleccia argues that teacher educators can gain legitimacy when they practice or model what they preach in program courses. The Southern Poverty Law Center has published a report about how the topic of slavery has been taught in the United States titled Teaching Hard History: A Framework for Teaching American Slavery. In the report, Hasan Kwame Jeffries notes that although history teachers certainly teach students that slavery occurred, many fail to provide the detail or historical context that they need to make sense of its origin, evolution, demise, and legacy. Secondary-level history classes that include a significant number of English language learners in particular can benefit from the inclusion of picture books in their curriculum.
