ABSTRACT

This chapter describes to increase student access and engagement during a design-based research (DBR) study of PurpleState Solutions. PurpleState utilizes an online platform and computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) design. DBR is particularly suited to a project situated in a CSCL environment, where the goal is to refine a simulation over multiple iterations. The DBR approach allowed for ongoing development of the simulation in response to the data collected in the WorkPro environment, and resulted in a more robust simulation and a broader array of rich data for measuring its effects. The chapter analyzes the chat data from the meetings to identify reasons why some groups displayed higher participation or more sustained student interaction. Future iterations will include additional professional development for the collaborating teachers on the workings of the simulation and the political-communications concepts it covers. Future iterations could examine how to create a more central role for mentors and teachers in the feedback and revision process.
