ABSTRACT

Historic and contemporary cultural diversity in Myanmar has facilitated artistic innovation and expression. This diversity and innovation was embraced in the post-independence period but became severely curtailed under military rule. Since the period of transition, the cultural sector has been steadily expanding with both government and private initiatives. Now there are challenges related to the recognition and conservation of heritage sites, and the liberalisation of artistic expression after decades of censorship. There is growing community interest in tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and a burgeoning in traditional arts and the broader artistic sector. Against a historical background, this chapter examines the development in Myanmar’s Art and Heritage sectors including central and local support for cultural heritage activities, and engagement with the international community and organisations.
