ABSTRACT
This chapter traces Myanmar’s political development since independence in 1948, with particular focus on how the early establishment of a military dominated national security state has affected the evolution of democracy and human rights up to the present day. The chapter develops a basic conceptual model of Myanmar politics, which is then applied across the major periods of the country’s political history, including some final reflections on the prospects for the emergence of a stronger rights-based regime in the future.
