ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to inspire, enthuse, and equip the with the relevant pedagogical skills to teach Religious Education creatively but with a meaningful purpose. Religious Education is a national curriculum subject but it must be taught in all community schools as enshrined in the 1988 Education Reform Act. Teachers’ Standard 3 makes the point clearly in that there is an imperative need to ‘have a secure subject knowledge of the relevant subject and curriculum areas, address misunderstandings and demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in the subject’. The school concentrates on placing children and the subject at the heart of its curriculum, concentrating on an inclusive approach. The school has a clear focus on the need for teacher to acquire subject knowledge and this will enable them to become confident practitioners within the subject. The values of Religious Education are clearly presented to the children through innovative and creative learning opportunities.
