ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the music lessons and what might be learnt from them. It discusses the case studies and literature what cognitive, intellectual and social opportunities participation in music can afford. The choice of repertoire is fundamental to a successful WCET programme, with the ‘inclusion of different types, styles and genres of music’. The children were asked to identify the difference between the sound and performance of the two versions, instilling in them a sense of ‘historical periods, genres, styles and traditions’. The recording of the children’s performance was a key motivational and educational aspect of this series of lessons. The repertoire comprises of simple melodies in various styles, each with a lively backing track with lyrics and actions to aid aural learning. Each tune has differentiated parts in order to ensure that every child can take part, and improvisation and copy-back sections to enable creativity.
