ABSTRACT
This chapter examines how Iranian parents living in Finland construct respectability as parents, and focuses on translocational positionality in terms of gender, class, and migration. The focus group of the study is Iranian parents with adult children. The study reveals that fathers describe losing their respectability after migration due to having fewer resources to renegotiate their respectable position, either as a provider for their family or as their children’s mentor. In contrast, mothers often feel that mothering itself gives them a sense of worth and self-respect. In addition, the role of the mother as a mediator, and its intersection with migration and class, is discussed in this chapter.
