ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the intersectional nature of identity formation in India, particularly the intersections in oppression and the possibility of alliances between feminists and people with non-normative queer identities. In order to do so, the chapter will focus on the analysis of pride parades and related events in India and compare the subversive spectacle of the parade with the hegemony of the Republic Day parade. The challenges associated with pride parades will be studied in the context of particularities of India to problematize issues related to the gaze, voyeurism and exhibitionism. The role of the media, especially new media and digital spaces, will be charted to outline the changes in the dissemination of information and images of pride parades.
