ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a consideration of desired synergisms between theory, evidence, and applications. It illustrates how the Living Systems Framework (LSF) might be used to guide decisions about interventions. In contrast, clinical and counseling psychology emphasize informational influences. Counseling may help the couple develop a shared interpretation of the perturbing events, thereby eliminating the estrangement and restoring their loving relationship. With the growth of health insurance and third-party payments, psychotherapy has become a billion-dollar industry, competition has become increasingly keen, and accountability requirements have become more explicit and demanding. Informational interventions are illustrated by teaching, psychotherapy, skill training, and advertising. Although space permits only a brief sketch of the possibilities, a diversity of examples illustrate the potential of the LSF as a source of ideas for health and human service professionals. The implications of the LSF’s basic principles of development for the design of intervention strategies and tactics.
