ABSTRACT
Foulkes’ stated belief that “communication is synonymous with therapy” rests on a vision of culture wherein difference in perception and understanding can be addressed through dialogue that seeks to translate both conscious and unconscious communication into a shared language. Describing work undertaken in an acute forensic hospital unit, this chapter suggests that the analyst’s use of analogy can offer a bridge between different worlds of experience. H G Wells’ short story, ‘The Country of the Blind’, is introduced as an analogue of how the understanding and facilitation of power relations is an essential factor in trying to bridge worlds of experience that may appear far apart.
