ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how the Talk for Maths Mastery (TFMM) initiative can help practitioners to develop good mathematical practice with their children, whilst at the same time furthering their own understanding and confidence. Feedback from the TFMM partners, at the end of year one, was extremely positive, as adults said they were “more confident at recognising, facilitating and deepening children’s mathematical learning”. TFMM strategies had “opened their eyes to mathematical opportunities”, and they “felt empowered to support children’s mathematical development”. Observation should be a central part of everyday professional practice when working with young children, so integrating this within TFMM is a smart use of time and can be used for multiple purposes. The chapter shows through the TFMM case study and following the process of practitioner inquiry how engaging in action research and reflecting on practice can lead to many positive outcomes.
